Phyllis Huang - Physique Competitor

The beginning: I was very overweight and finally had enough when I saw a home video of me at a friendís birthday party. I thought I looked very gross. I had to do something. It was just weight loss at first, but then I decided to challenge myself and see how far I could take it. Thatís how it turned into bodybuilding and competing.

Diet change off-season vs. pre-contest: Not very much, just more cheat meals. Once a week. I found in when I lower carbs such as rice and sweet potatoes, I can lose weight pretty quickly. Adding more protein has helped me add muscle.

I tried fasting one day a week three weeks prior to my last show and I learned it made me too flat and I couldnít fill out fast enough for pre-judging. The key is to start cardio early enough so you donít have to resort to drastic measures to cut fat.

Iíve competed in something all my life. I started with gymnastics and piano, then it was swim team, Muay Thai and volleyball. Iíve been athletic my entire life.

Training: Itís fasted cardio every morning, then breakfast, then a workout where I focus on two muscle groups. I eat every two hours.

On stage: I was very excited and not nervous at all. It was like Christmas to me. I couldnít wait to get on stage and show off my hard work. The other competitors in the warm up room were all very nice and sweet. Everyone is out to have a good time and it was awesome.

Being an athlete: Itís made me serious about goals and ambition in my professional life and itís made me take the time to relax in my personal life. I have found a good balance for everything.
