Kim Klein Interview

New Jersey's Kim Klein, a former gymnastics star, began competing in fitness competitions in 1996. By 1997 she won her first competition, Mid-Atlantic Fitness and by 1998 was the New Jersey State Fitness champion. After two years off to finish her college education, she produced a stunning comeback and became the 2002 NPC USA Fitness champion, earning her pro card.
She constantly continues her upward trend, polishes her strength, flexibility and endurance which earned her the 2008 Ms. Fitness International Champion title. Kim is aiming to wear Ms. Fitness Olympia crown soon. Interview with a fitness superstar.

* Kim, how are you?

Kim Klein: I'm very good. I'm enjoying my win, running my gym, and life!!!

* Describe the experience of winning this year's Arnold Classic. How does this win feel compared to your 2007 victory?

Kim Klein: Winning this year's Fitness International feels great. It's a big accomplishment for me and all my hard work paid off. This year's win meant alot to me do to my personal life this year.

* What do you think has given you the edge over your competitors?

Kim Klein: It's hard to say what my edge is over the other competitors because it's been very close for the past few years. I think maybe I just had a better overall package with my shape, symmetry and my strong routines.

* What are some of the influences in your life that contributed to your formidable success as a fitness competitor?

Kim Klein: I am definitely have a strong drive. I love to compete and see each show my improvements. I continue to improve because I push myself to look better every time. I do have a very strong support team which consists of my family and close friends that has helped me to push along and continue to improve.

* What is the biggest challenge you've faced as a fitness competitor?

Kim Klein: My biggest challenge as a compeitor was always trying to be more entertaining to the crowd in my routines. I've always had very strong routines with gymnastics and alot of strength moves.

* What is your level of determination, and how has your competitive instinct changed over time?

Kim Klein: My level of determination has always been very high. I'm very hard on myself. I always find something wrong so that I can improve it for the next time.

* When preparing for a fitness competition, how do you divide the time between working on your fitness routine and improving your physique?

Kim Klein: Preparing for a show, I definitely manage my time very well. Depending on my workout schedule, I train with weights 5 to 6 times a week and I work on my routines 1 to 2 times a week. When I'm a month out from a show, my routine practices increase.

* What has been your Arnlod Classic contest nutrition program?

Kim Klein: My nutrition program is very simple. I eat 5 to 6 times a day depending on the time I get up in the morning. I eat every 3 hours. I have 6 egg whites and a bowl of oatmeal in the morning and every other meal consists of a protein, carb, and a veggie. Some of my proteins are turkey, chicken, fish, and steak. My carbs are potatoes, rice, and oatmeal. My veggies are broc., cailiflower, asparagus. Sometimes I will even have a salad with protein on it for a meal.

* How did you acquire your vast knowledge related to fitness, muscles and diet? Do you consider yourself an autodidact?

Kim Klein: I have acquired my knowledge from being around the sport for 12 years, reading about everything, and also from close people to me that knows alot about the sport.

* You've graduated from Georgian Court College in 1999 with a B.A. and dual certification in Elementary Education and Special Education. What made you decide to study Education?

Kim Klein: As a child I always said that I wanted to be a teacher. I enjoy working with children and teaching them right from wrong. It was also a challenge for me to see them improve in their education and social life.

* Let's talk about your gym, Xtreme Fitness Zone, . I see visitors are given a free work out, and obviously training with an elite professional athlete as you can be very effective. How did the gym start, and what do you like there the most?

Kim Klein: I bought the gym from the previous owner. The gym was open for 10 years before I bought it.
I enjoy educating people about training and nutrition.

* Could tell me about a favorite experience you've had working as a fitness model?

Kim Klein: I don't really have a favorite experience as a fitness model. I enjoy doing photo shoots, working the booths at shows, and expediting the shows.

* So, what else is going on in your life?

Kim Klein: There really is nothing else going on in my life. I'm just busy in the gym all day.

* What do you like to do in your spare time?

Kim Klein: In my spare time, when I get it, I like to relax, talk a walk on the beach, and go shopping. I would love to take a vacation but I don't have that much spare time, hopefully soon I will.

* What is next for you?

Kim Klein: My next show is the Fitness Olympia. I have come in 2nd place three years in a row so hopefully this year will be mine.
