Erica Christy - Figure Competitor

Erica: My fitness journey began shortly after the birth of my daughter, Ava, almost four years ago. I was unhappy with the changes my body had gone through and was determined to get back into shape. I had just moved to a new town and didn't know anybody, so I joined the local gym and started going with my boyfriend, a bodybuilder. I didn't really know my way around the weights yet, so I would hang out on the cardio machines or do ab workouts. I wasn't getting the results that I wanted. My boyfriend encouraged me to start lifting weights, he had just signed up with IFBB pro Darren Toma. I immediately noticed changes in his physique, and starting doing some of his workouts. I met with Darren a few months later with the goal to do my first figure show, this past november. I ending up winning my class and the overall title.

My diet consists of six meals a day, eating every 3 hours. Protein can come from white fish, turkey breast, egg whites, and one meal of iso protein powder. Complex carbs such as yams, brown rice, potatoes, and oats. I eat a ton of vegetables, and EFA's are mostly from hemp oil, avocado, and almond butter but no fruit or dairy. During off season my diet is still clean, but I do allow myself some treats once in a while. Some of my favourites are cheesecake and all you can eat sushi. For supplements, I use pre workout, BCAA's, and glutamine. Closer to stage, I also add a mild fat burner, and L-Carnatine.

At 15 I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I was often sick, in and out of the hospital, and relied on heavy prescription drugs with unpleasant side effects. Changing my diet to whole, unprocessed foods has allowed me to go off medications, and I have been in remission for over four years now. I have learned that it is not a diet, but a lifestyle change. Proper nutrition has had such a positive impact in my life that I want to study it further so I can someday help others.

I train 5 days a week, targeting most muscle groups twice. I like to lift as heavy as possible while maintaing proper form, with little rest time. I do cardio six days a week, am and pm during contest prep. During the off season I do three 20 minute sessions a week to maintain.

It can be hard to find time for everything with an active toddler. I find that prepping meals ahead of time is a big time saver! I am also lucky to have a great support system, between my family and friends. Through the ups and downs, they were always there for me with kind and encouraging words. I am very thankful to have found the right team for my first show, and am very excited to be working with Darren towards my new goal, this year's B.C Provincial's.
