Amanda Snooks - Physique Competitor

My background as a child I was overactive and always into sports and things, growing up I raced and rode horses and still do so that laid the foundation for where I am now. Taught me dedication, work ethic, passion, hard work, discipline. I always worked out, but in 2004 I ended up going to a fitness camp that was hosted by a fitness pro athlete in the bodybuilding world and everything changed for me then and there. I learned that was what I wanted to do and I became a personal trainer and started learning and absorbing all the information on this lifestyle I could.

Diet off-season vs. pre-contest: The diet for me changes only in the calorie intake or carb intake mostly. I cut out natural sugars like fruit about 4 weeks after I start dieting for a show. I no longer have a cheat meal every week when I am prepping for a show, I stick to chicken and fish for my protein sources for a contest prep where in off season I like to have a variety, lean beef or steak in my offseason I love. My carb sources I stick to are usually sweet potato, white rice and oatmeal. And greens I usually switch them up asparagus, green beans and broccoli or spinach. There's not much of a huge difference from my prep and off season diet as the staples of food are usually somewhat the same. Ratios are differ and when I get closer to show time the protein sources are different. A balance healthy diet always works well for weight loss and muscle building. High protein low carb and greens. and water is important as well as having the activity to go with it. It works as a puzzle really, you need all the pieces to make it work. There is no magic formula, its hard work but it's rewarding when you achieve it.
I would say the least effective meal plans and diets are like no carbs no sugar, basically like you are starving your body of food and nutrients and it goes into a catablolic type of a state where it holds onto fat and you don't burn it.

I learned just by doing shows over and over and being proud of the condition I brought and knowing I deserved to be there as I worked just as hard as anyone else, I think you learn that over time, I don't think you just automatically have that. It's nerve racking being in a little suit onstage and everyone judging you. My first show I definitely had stage fright but you know after this will be now 10 years on that stage, it's like my home. I own it and am always proud regardless of what the outcome is and if I can give anyone advice it would be not to compare yourself to anyone else, it's truly the worst thing you can do for yourself and your self confidence.

OFF SEASON: it's usually less cardio and it's the most important time truly as I am putting all the extra calories to work to build the physique I want onstage, usually I am training 6 days a week, I break up my legs and one day is a quad focus and one is a hamstring focus but all body parts are broken down and extra focus goes to my weak parts that need improvement. so weights is always first and then cardio and offseason I usually stick to 3-4 days of cardio 20-30 mins of light cardio nothing to big as I'm just trying to stabilize my weigh and keep the fat at bay. Show prep is usually a fasted cardio and weights with another cardio. And I start out 30 mins and 45 min cardio sessions. That's usually 5-6 days a week as well and I add posing into that.

Recent experience of my last 2016 contest in November for the OPA GALA Championship. Well I was just so excited to be there and show what I brought I knew I had brought a condition like no other and that it was my best condition and package to date so it all was so exciting and thrilling for me.

Being an athlete: Wow that is a loaded question, it affects everything in my life truly. Everything is always surrounding by eating, meal prepping and gym time. You have to balance a lot of things like work and relationships and it's a lot of sacrifice. Things that should get put on the back burner do and people and relationships do. It's a very selfish type of a sport so you really have to be good at time management and balance the rest of your life and family and loved ones and relationships.

Well I want to become pro one day. I believe in myself to the point I know that will happen as I have a great work ethic that I have been instilled in me. But as for right now I have a lot in my personal life that I am trying to balance out and work life. I am a woman with big dreams that I am in the middle of making happen, so some things have taken priority over competing as why I haven't stepped on stage in 2017. But look out 2018 as it will be a huge year for me professional and competitively.
