Stephanie Bauman - Figure Competitor

Stephanie: It all started when I took a weight training class in high school. I fell in love with lifting weights and building muscle. I have always been a runner/endurance athlete. Itís very hard to build muscle while training for marathons. I ran a marathon right after college and then I did a half ironman and 3 Spartan races. After doing all that I felt like Iíve achieved everything I wanted to with the endurance side of fitness. Now time to focus on strength and muscle.

People saw me working out in the gym and kept telling me I should do a body building show. I kept telling them ďoh no I couldnít get up on stageĒ. Then I realized as a personal trainer I make my clients get out of their comfort zone every day. Why shouldnít I? It was 8 weeks out from a local NPC show. I decided to finally do the figure competition. I found a coach to help me, because I knew these next 8 weeks will have to be perfect.

I started with changing my diet. I usually would eat whenever I was hungry and tried to stick with right macronutrients. This prep made me eat 6 meals a day every 2-3 hours. I only had one major cheat the whole 8 weeks. That was an awesome pretzel burger with sweet potato fries. Yum! I was working out 6 days a week. Two body parts a day and twice a week for each body part. I also was waking up early to do fasted cardio to help burn more fat. While doing fasted cardio I made sure to drink BCAAís to help maintain the muscle I had. The fasted cardio was to burn extra body fat not muscle.

I really wasnít concerned about the diet and exercise prep for the show. My main concern was getting brave enough to get up on stage. Building that confidence took a lot of self coaching and just believing in myself. Practicing the poses also helped with that. I should have practiced more though. When it came time to the show I didnít have the best stage presence. But I will continue to practice and hopefully next time it will be more natural for me. I did get up on that stage only a few weeks ago. Placing fourth and Iím really proud of that. I know I can do better and I will do better. I can honestly say Iím proud that I was able to get up on that stage and present my physique with smile on my face. I really did enjoy the prep for the show. Watching your body change just by what you put in your mouth was absolutely amazing. I learned a ton and wouldnít change anything. Itís how I learn to grow. I know what I need to work on for next time and Iím going to do just that.

For the future, I do want to do another show this year. But the prep will be different. Iíve recently turned my diet to an anabolic fasting diet. Where I fast for 16 hours a day and have an 8 hour eating window. My goal is to get lean again on this new lifestyle and hopefully do my next show with this eating routine. Makes life easier when you only eat 3 meals instead of 6. There are a lot of people out there that say you have to eat as soon as you wake up and must eat every 2-3 hours to lose body fat and build muscle. But I believe in this new system and my goal is show off anabolic fasting at my next show.
