Melissa Lovell - Physique Competitor

My name is Melissa Lovell and I have been competing since 2012 as a women's physique competitor. I love the physique division because it displays both femininity and muscularity. I have always been athletic and involved in sports through high school and even played on some adult teams. I started weight training in 2009 and quickly fell in love. I found that I could build strength and muscle very well and often lift heavier than most guys in the gym. But it was my older brother that suggested I try competing. I thought he was crazy at the time but took a few years to research and attend a few shows and finally decided that was what I wanted to do. I love the sport of competitive bodybuilding. It demands 110% and watching your body sculpt into a piece of art is truly facinating.

When it comes to contest prep, your meal plan is key. No amount of cardio will offset a bad diet. During contest prep I intake a high protein/moderate fat/ moderate to low carb diet. My carbs are adjusted for what is needed. During off season I still maintain a consistent meal plan but my carbs are much higher and I allow myself a little freedom.

One of the best supplements I can recommend is taking 5 to 10g of BCAAs during your workout. I find that I recover much quicker from my workouts when I take it consistently. I prefer the BSN brand that comes in a variety of flavors.

I try to keep in mind when I'm working out what my goal is. What I'm trying to target and how I want to sculpt. I incorporate a lot of high volume and super sets to keep up the intensity during a workout. Especially during contest prep when my energy and strength are low. In the off season I will add in a few max sets. Cardio I keep to a minimum during off season so that when contest prep comes around I'm not stuck doing endless hours of cardio.

Getting ready for a show is a process but when the day finally comes it's an amazing feeling to look back and see what you have accomplished. Best advice I can give on show day is to have fun and be confident. You worked hard to get there so be proud of yourself.

Currently I'm getting ready for my next national show on July 3rd and 4th at the Team Universe Nationals in New Jersey. And from there who knows!
