Jessica Martin - IFBB Pro - Womens Physique

I never knew what "competing" in bodybuilding meant until one day in the gym a woman asked me if I competed. I had no idea what she was talking about, but did some research. What I found were pictures of women who had incredibly muscular physiques. At the encouragement of a friend, I decided to do my first competition in figure. It was so much fun, I've been competing ever since.

Diet off-season vs. pre-contest: My diet mainly changes in volume. Eating less calories pre contest. I've never found it very effective to have conflicting goals. Losing weight and building muscle conflict in my opinion. In my off season I focus on building and pre contest I focus on conditioning. I've tried dieting year round, that resulted in very conditioned look, but I could not build any muscle. In my off season, I do very little cardio. Pre-contest I incorporate HIIT. I lift 6 days a week year round.

Self-confidence: This is something I still struggle with. However, I am a firm believer that sometimes the thing that scares you the most is the thing you must do in order to grow as a person.

Last summer I competed in my first pro show, the Arctic Pro. It was an incredible experience from start to end. I enjoyed seeing and meeting all the competitors at the check in. A few of which I have admired for some time. The contest itself was extremely organized and the promoters were so helpful.

Being an athlete: At first, it was all consuming. However, over time it takes up less and less time. I have gotten more efficient with meal prep. Family dinners can be a challenge when I'm on prep....but I never miss spending time with the people I love the most just because I may not be sharing the same food. They are much more used to it now. I keep my gym time to the late evenings so that I can spend the day either at work or with my family.

I will compete again sometime this year (summer or fall 2018). I haven't decided which contest to do yet! I'm not a personal trainer but sometimes post training videos and pictures to my Instragram site at jessimartin1815
