Jan is Ms. Manawatu-Wanganui (a region of New Zealand) Physique for 2015, NABBA

Jan: I've always been a competitive sports person playing national level hockey for Auckland, Waikato and Central along with Touch Rugby in Waikato and Wanganui. Being a qualified fitness instructor I have always enjoyed doing weights. Once I had my children I became a home mum and just worked on the farm and played sport. In 2005 I joined City Gym in Wanganui and convinced Pat Mcnamara into training me and I have been competing since 2006.

My diet from off season to pre contest doesn't change a lot. I just add a few more starchy carbs in the off season ie - Oats, Rice flakes, Brown Rice, Buckwheat, Quinoa and Kumera along with egg whites, fish, chicken, red meat and lots of green vegetables. I also use protein powder, some fruit and nuts, BCAA, Creatine and L Glutamine.

For me the confidence to get up on stage for my first show came from knowing I had done the hard work and diet I needed to. I still get a little nervous before I get on stage but everyone back stage is very supportive it helps you to relax.

At present I train 1 body part a day so train 5 days a week. I are looking at changing it to 6 days a week with legs twice a week. Keeping the balance between diet and training works really well for me I take my afternoon meal with me to have after my training - this is usually egg whites.

My last competition was the Natural Olympia in Las Vegas. At the athlete check in I always feel a bit nervous and excited. Pre judging I feel similar and am always a bit worried that I not doing my posing correctly. Finals I am a little more relaxed as most of the judging is done by now. The main thing is to enjoy your time on stage and show this while your out there.

My future plans are to get my legs more cut and get on stage next year looking the best I can. Hopefully do some more overseas competitions.
