Overall Winner, 2018 NPC Dexter Jackson Classic

I have a background in athletics, playing competitive tennis for about 10 years. After high school I got into lifting here and there but didn't take it seriously until about 4 years ago. Earlier this year (Feb 2018) I felt stuck in my fitness journey, and needed a new outlet to express my passion for fitness. So my boyfriend suggested I look into competing. At first, I was hesitant because I didn't think I had it in me. But I'm hooked now and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me!

Diet: Because this is my first year, I have not had a real structured "off season". But I have taken a couple different approaches to prep diet. I started out on a meal plan, or "Bro Diet". But with my new coach, we are on a structured macro plan, with a more flexible approach. I find the flexible dieting approach more effective mainly because it's sustainable, and easily incorporated as a LIFESTYLE.
I've tried the meal plan approach, or "bro diet" (chicken, fish, rice, spinach, potatoes, etc) and while it was effective in weight loss, I didn't see it as a realistic long term diet. I wanted something that I felt I could enjoy, and could make into a life style.

How do I build my confidence? I make sure I give it my all in my training, and my diet. And I put the time into practicing "the walk"! I'm not a naturally confident person, I'm actually quite introverted and a bit shy. So I practice my posing and walking pretty regularly, until it feels natural. Almost like a "fake it, till you make it" approach.

I have a workout split that I keep pretty consistent Monday through Friday, rest Saturday, yoga on Sunday. Cardio changes depending on the stage of prep we're in and my conditioning. I consistently do steady state cardio (incline walking!) and we incorporate HIIT if we need to, but my leg training days typically incorporate higher intensity workouts.

My most recent competition was the Dexter Jackson Classic in Jacksonville this past July. The show was extremely well run. Prejudging and Finals went smoothly, but was a VERY long day. I ended up taking the winning my class and taking the overall, which exceed my completely expectations! The girls look amazing, and was definitely a competitive line up. So I feel honored to have earned that.

Being an athlete has given me a sense of purpose in my life I didn't realize I was missing. As a student and competitor, it has taught me that I am capable of a level of discipline and commitment I didn't know I had. It's forced me to be much more organized, and had given my an outlet to express my passion for fitness.

After winning my first overall, and becoming nationally qualified, I have decided to compete in my first national competition in the near future. I want to see how far I can take this sport while pursing my doctorate in physical therapy, and to be the best I can possibly be, while inspiring others to do the same, and any aspect of life.
